I do appreciate that the writer for "Richard Diamond" likes to insert a few "slices of life" into the scripts. It offers a better sense of what life was like in 1949.

The sound wasn't great on this recording before I restored it, so you'll hear a fair number of swallowed consonants on this presentation. (The original just had a lot of muddled voices.) I think all the dialog is clear enough, but I'm pretty sure there's enough artifacts to point to something odd in the voices...

"Unconsciousness" is the "deus ex machina" of noir and crime fiction. While it will always delay the protagonist, it's completely survivable!

If thugs ever thought of actually killing all the gumshoes, rather than just knocking them out, the entire genre would collapse overnight.

I watched "Murder, My Sweet" yesterday. Only someone else's shot stopped a femme fatale from plugging Philip Marlowe (played by Dick Powell), and in another scene he was drugged up for days in a sketchy sanitarium, near death.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Austin Rich:

Another show where the archived recording had really poor sound, most notable the clicks, pops, hums and rhythmic sounds of the turntable that was used in transferring the recording of this show to another format. I've done my best to try and improve things so you don't notice them as much, but there will be plenty of artifacts as we listen tonight.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Austin Rich:

Delmonte Foods really integrated their name into the scripts once they became the sponsors for Rocky Jordan, so rather than continue with "Little Egypt Brand Cigarettes," I decided to go with the flow. Delmonte forced TWO commercial breaks per episode, and had the announcer say the name of the sponsor a number of times elsewhere, too. No mater how you slice it, you're going to have a reference to Delmonte, so I decided to go with it.

Austin Rich:

↳ Imaginos @9:40
Oh yes! I think Webhamster was talking about that, too!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Austin Rich:

With the added references to the sponsors, and the second commercial break per show, the structure of the show during this phase changes a bit, to accomodate a satisfying "cliffhanger" and "resolution" before and after each commercial. It's not that the shows are worse, but the style of the show certainly changes with the new sponsor.

My father worked for Southern Pacific Railroad, and has written a bunch of short stories about his time working for "SP." One story is about him asking his boss - on behalf of the other crew - about changing a policy that no one liked. His boss said he'd have to ask about it. Weeks later, word came back, after it went up and back, that no one at the company cared about or knew about that policy at all, and wondered why the crew thought it was something they had to follow.
